Promoting mental health in young children – a dialogue-based approach in kindergartens.
Background
Around 7% of Norwegian preschoolers face mental health challenges, underscoring the importance of early detection to mitigate progression and reduce the need for later costly interventions. Kindergartens, attended by 97% of Norwegian 3–5-year-olds, provide an ideal setting for early detection. Despite this, current tools for identifying mental health challenges are limited in accessibility, practicality, and user-friendliness.
The Pro-Dialog method, developed by Dr. Ingvar Bjelland at Haukeland University Hospital, includes the use of Early Worry Questionnaire (EWQ) specifically designed for assessment of mental health concerns in preparation to the mandatory biannual parent-teacher conference. A digital version of Pro-Dialog®, developed in collaboration with Youwell, streamlines the process with secure data management, an intuitive interface, and seamless integration into existing kindergarten workflows.

Further, the method facilitates parent-teacher collaboration and supports adequate and timely interventions when needed. Technology description
Completing and displaying EWQ answers together with conclusions and possible supportive interventions from the parent-teacher conference are mediated via a digital platform. The platform facilitates semi-structured conversations, ensuring mental health concerns are documented and addressed appropriately and securely. This tool is designed to integrate seamlessly into kindergarten routines, improving both the efficiency and effectiveness of early intervention efforts.
